Changes in groundwater irrigation withdrawals due to climate change in Kansas

چکیده
Abstract Warming temperatures increase the evapotranspiration demand of crops, leading to an in irrigation and exacerbating water scarcity. Previous research relies on models requirements understand potential impacts climate change, but these have significant uncertainty ignore risk-averse behavior irrigators. Here we develop regression estimate how changes vapor pressure deficit precipitation affect groundwater withdrawals for corn, soybeans, wheat using well-level data from Kansas portion High Plains Aquifer. Withdrawals are expected all three with largest soybeans. Even after accounting CO2 improvements transpiration efficiency, find that total by 5.9% (7.6%) mid-century under RCP 4.5 (8.5). The is accelerate decline aquifer levels therefore important consider when projecting future conditions.

Detecting the Impact of Climate Change Droughts on Changes in Groundwater Resources. Case Study: Birjand County
Increasing atmospheric anomalies have altered some of the extreme events such as global warming droughts, many climatic components such as precipitation, evapotranspiration, temporal and spatial distribution of precipitation, followed by dominoes of changes in freshwater resources available to communities. Human changes such as changes in the hydrological regime of rivers, changes in the qualit...
متن کاملDecentralization and Economic Incentives to Manage Groundwater Withdrawals for Irrigation: from Theory to Practice
France is currently embarking upon a drastic reform of quantitative water resources management. This reform relies on two principles: the definition of an upper limit to water abstraction per water body and the decentralization of the responsibility for allocating water among users, in particular in the agricultural sector. This paper looks at possible institutional arrangements and incentive-b...
متن کاملChanges in grassland ecosystem function due to extreme rainfall events: implications for responses to climate change
Climate change is causing measurable changes in rainfall patterns, and will likely cause increases in extreme rainfall events, with uncertain implications for key processes in ecosystem function and carbon cycling. We examined how variation in rainfall total quantity (Q), the interval between rainfall events (I), and individual event size (SE) affected soil water content (SWC) and three aspects...
متن کاملPotential changes in carbon dynamics due to climate change measured in the past two decades 1
Evidence suggests that climate change dynamics have been occurring in the northern latitudes for the past two and a half decades. The CENTURY ecosystem model was used for a set of simulations related to the carbon dynamics of interior Alaska taiga forest types. The functional dynamics of three age-classes (young, middle, and mature) of three ecosystem types (white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) ...
متن کاملUncertainty in projections of streamflow changes due to climate change in California
[1] Understanding the uncertainty in the projected impacts of climate change on hydrology will help decision-makers interpret the confidence in different projected future hydrologic impacts. We focus on California, which is vulnerable to hydrologic impacts of climate change. We statistically bias correct and downscale temperature and precipitation projections from 10 GCMs participating in the C...
